A cultural programme exploring Mahatma Gandhi’s relationship with music and the idea of civilisation’s plurality was recently held in Bengaluru, drawing attention to Gandhi’s philosophical and cultural legacy through artistic expression.
The event, organised at Gandhi Bhavan,a local institute dedicated to promoting Gandhian values and thought, brought together musicians, scholars and cultural practitioners to reflect on how music reflects and nurtures peaceful coexistence and diversity. Gandhi Bhavan regularly serves as a venue for discussions and events that highlight Gandhian philosophy in contemporary society.
Speakers highlighted Gandhi’s belief that music can transcend religious and cultural boundaries, fostering harmony and unity across communities. They also discussed how musical traditions intersect with Gandhi’s broader ideals of non-violence, unity and respect for cultural diversity.
The programme emphasised the role of artistic expression, including musical performance and dialogue,in preserving and promoting the principles of pluralism and social cohesion that were central to Gandhi’s vision for India.
