Bollywood actor Rani Mukerji has responded to recent remarks by Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman, asserting that the Hindi film industry remains highly secular and merit-based. Mukerji’s comments come amid a wider debate sparked by Rahman’s suggestion that changing power dynamics in the industry may have had communal implications.
Speaking to DD News while promoting her upcoming film Mardaani 3, Mukerji said she has never personally encountered caste or religion-based discrimination in her more than 30-year career in Hindi cinema. “Bollywood is the most secular place, and I truly believe that … there is no discrimination based on caste or religion,” she said, emphasising that merit and audience connection are the true determinants of success.
She added that “your work speaks for you” and highlighted the inclusive, diverse nature of the industry she has been part of for decades.
Rahman’s original comments, made in an interview with the BBC Asian Network, referenced a perceived shift in decision-making power within the Hindi film music scene in recent years, which he said “might have been a communal thing”. He later clarified via social media that he did not intend to hurt sentiments and reiterated his lifelong commitment to music and Indian culture.
Mukerji’s remarks reflect one of the more prominent industry voices offering a contrasting view to Rahman’s, underscoring ongoing discussions within Bollywood about inclusivity, creative dynamics and the role of merit in shaping careers.
